The book is Ok but the DVD, not so much! when you start up the DVD there are quite a few sub-folders for you to click through, I found this to be pretty annoying. Once you click on one of the files; if you already have Pro tools installed, I do that's why I say if, well when you click on, it opens your Pro Tools software program. The part I don't like is the fact that it has already set up your track list for you and there are some vocal samples, guitar licks etc. on the tracks set up. The other reason why I don't care for the DVD is because already setting up the session doesn't give the person attempting to learn how to properly use Pro Tools an opportunity to fully set up the sessions themselves. As a person that creates music, this will not show you how to get from point A to point B. Not sure who created this DVD but for over 40 bucks I expected much more! For example when I first got Reason Adapted; I have the latest version now, but a friend gave me a tutorial DVD that was so comprehensive that I quickly learned how to use the program in two days and had to upgrade the version of Reason I had lol! You can try it out if you want to, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I have Pro Tools 12 and this book didn't help me at all, I actually want a refund. So I can try Pro Tools for Dummies, I have the title of those book, because I am no dummy but they are Comprehensive as heck! And the point is to be able to follow along on a tutorial DVD and with this one it's already set up so, yeah this is my review. Hope it helps someone.
Gives the Pro Tools user the basic "tools" to get started with this amazing and evolving DAW. I found it helpful even for the current version of 12.5. However you will need to use PT hands on and experiment and supplement your learning with video tutorials and the included manual that Pro Tools comes with. Remember, this is an introduction to Pro Tools.Once you acclimate to the essential features of Pro Tools you will become a lifetime student, since the program is constantly improving and changing. I am personally using the latest version of Pro Tools 12.5, however this workbook was still beneficial.There are exercises and a DVD and chapter questions included in this book to help the student/user apply what you have learned.Combined with all of the above and a passion to learn, you will become a Pro Tools expert in no time.
Frank Cook's books are the definitive source for basic Pro Tools information. This is Pro Tools basics, but you will be surprised how much information is disseminated, even at the "101" level. As a Certified Pro Tools Instructor and former Product Specialist at Digidesign, I can tell you that this is the book we use for Certified training in our instructor led 101 classes at Electric Lounge in Chicago. The only reason this isn't a five star review is that I feel even the 101 book can be advanced for the complete novice. (this is no fault of the author or text). Mr. Cook's writing is clear and engaging and well structured....not an easy task with an ever expanding amount of subject matter as features continue to be added with each revision.
This book was in pretty good shape except for most of the pages lifted and separated at the bottom when turning pages, which was concerning. The pages never fully came out because I was careful. Other than that I have no complaints. The book itself is good stuff for someone who wants "An Introduction to Pro Tools 11." Pro Tools 2018 is out now and most of the info in this book is still applicable.
I lucked into owning a version of protools on my computer and this book is now a necessity for me. I did not know much about this application and this book has everything one needs to not only get started but produce some high quality music. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the program.
Still reading through this but I can't find a session in the books that demonstrates certain ranges like, a good de-esser range for male|female vocals, etc. Maybe it's further in though so don't count this out! In any case, this is definitely the book to get if you want to become certified in Pro Tools.
This was a handy reference for Pro Tools.The information was clear and concise.The online manual that comes with Pro Tools is much more extensive and covers everything that is covered by this book. When I was learning PT, I'd read this before bedtime to reinforce what I'd learned at the computer.
The book you will use if you take a pro tools class with avid in LA, New York, or Atlanta. This teaches you what the program does, where the menus are, and NOT the art of recording. Great reference book from the source. Puts more tools in your basket.
